June 19, 1964 – January 7, 2014

Sami Samir Lahoud went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 after a courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelors of Science (BS) in Computer Science and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Houston Baptist University.

Sami held various high profile technical and management positions at ExxonMobil (EM) for the last 23 years in the Information Technology Department. Sami had several expatriate assignments including assignments in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Iraq. His last assignment was as IT manager with responsibilities to setup and manage the IT infrastructure of EM’s new Dubai affiliate with approximately 200 expats and concurrently to design, setup and manage the IT infrastructure in Iraq for a new operating company with 100 EM expats and 1,300 Iraqi nationals.  According to ExxonMobil,  “The IT setup for the Iraqi operating company was as complex and difficult as any project ExxonMobil had ever attempted and Sami did it with class and style.”

Sami had a great spiritual impact on the lives of so many people, especially the young people whom he actively led and invested years teaching, counseling and gently leading them to a deeper life in Jesus Christ at the Arabic Church of Houston, where he was one of the founding servant leaders and deacons. He also was a member, Sunday School teacher and deacon at Sugar Creek Baptist Church.

Sami fought the good fight of faith until the very end and kept his eyes on His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For 900 days during his illness, Sami did not waste a minute at MD Anderson Cancer Center without sharing the love of Christ with terminal cancer patients, nurses, physicians and health care workers.  Sami used to repeat this verse many times from Psalm 73:26 “My flesh and my heart may fail me but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” He is now forever with the One who loved Him to the uttermost and whom he loved to the uttermost. He is now where he always longed to be and where he belongs.

Sami is survived by his wife Jacqueline of 19 years (who also was his right hand in ministry), daughters Wadad (18), Jeanette (15) and son Samir (13), mother Wadad Lahoud, sisters Lamia (wife of Dr. Issam Raad) and Rima Lahoud. He was affectionately known as “Khalo” (which means “uncle”) by not only his nieces and nephews but also all the youth around him.

I am saddened by the passing of a school mate from the times of the Evangelical School. Sami was a light since then. At the time he expressed his emotions with humor. He will always be in my thoughts as a giving caring individual. His blog attests his openness and what he gave the youth ministry of his time must have left an indelible mark on the lucky ones who attended. In such a short life you have given so much! I know you are in a better place! May you rest in peace dear Sami! I pray your family copes with the pain your absence will leave. It will not be easy on them! Tante Wadad I do not know you bas Allah min 3indo y’aweekeh! Jaqueline you fought along his side and the fight will go on to get your family in a secure place. May God give you the strength to go on. And may all the good memories – and I know you have a sea of them – engulf you with his love. For he like Jesus truly keeps a trail of love alive. Sami ma byintasa! That is why any memory of him will stay alive inshalla! He is from God and to God he has returned!

I just learned about Sami’s passing by pure chance. I had been looking for him on the internet for years.

Sami and I used to be inseparable at school (Ahlieh) . We formed a team of two to drive our poor supervisor and most of the teachers nuts. But Sami’s grades were much higher than mine. He knew how to have fun and to remain a brilliant student at the same time.

I used to call him Semsom, I remember him as a smart, kind, hardworking person gifted with the greatest sense of humour.

On this blog, I was able to see Sami’s face as an adult for the first time. We only knew each other as kids. The last time that I saw him was in 1983.

May he rest in peace. He will always be remembered as a very precious friend and schoolmate.

My deepest condolences to his wife Jacqueline and his children.

    Aline
